Building Sustainable Economic Development
By Kaedden Michael Landy
Sustainable economic development is based around supporting locally owned businesses with sustainable practices. It is fine to include corporations so long as they are locally franchised and supportive of sustainable practices and human rights world wide. This practice for an economic system is really not so difficult to understand, or even to implement, and it truly allows every dollar spent to go toward building a more sustainable economy. We are certainly going to have our differences in this understanding. If you come from a background of making money from the exploitation of people and or the environment, then you are bound to have a different perspective on how an economic system works best.
The sustainability perspective on economy respects all people (ie. fair trade) and all natural resources. The capitalist system we currently work within was constructed by wealthy people for wealthy people and is based in greed and corruption. It is the system which has built the greatest empire on Earth and that has promoted the some of the worst policies ever to be put into practice on the basis of "this is what is best for free trade". It is truly a system of economic slavery and prejudice not based on skin color but on ones ability or inability to accumulate wealth. Admittedly, most folks of color never had a chance in this system and the people who created the system didn't care about that, nor did they care that this system divides them from many in their own ethnic group. Ultimately, it is all about control. Control by the few, over the poor huddled masses, by whatever means necessary (money just makes it easy). It doesn't take a rocket scientist economist to understand that people will do stupid and even psychotic things for money, just turn on any reality tv program offering some huge prize for stupid human tricks.
Localizing every dollar we can is the primary way to build a sustainable economy, provided the businesses in our networks understand this concept as well. We must be careful of excluding anyone from our network because we have the opportunity to help business owners, employees, stockholders, and all aspects of the business community to rise up to a new level of understanding how sustainability can work for them and everyone. Education is priceless.
