THE DREAM REBORN

Last weekend in Memphis, I personally had my Dr. Martin Luther King's Dream Reborn. Just being in Memphis for such an occasion for someone my age was in itself a dream. To find myself on Friday morning April 4th, 40 year to the day that Dr. King was assassinated standing in the mist of the union that represented the garbage men, Dr. King had gone to Memphis to defend, was a tremendous emotional experience. Then to march from the union hall to the Lorraine Hotel where he (Dr. King) lost his life, singing Songs like “We shall overcome”, had tears of both sadness and joy streaming down my cheeks at the same time. As I ran around the crowd to get just the right picture, I was caught up in the awe of a very historical moment. It was raining which I was told was the same kind of rain that had caused the two black garbage men who were not allowed to get out of the rain with their white co-workers to seek shelter in the back of their garbage truck, which ended up (somehow??) become their final place of rest. So marching with the Garbage workers union and hundreds of Dr. King supporters, made walking in the rain more enjoyable. When I finally made it to the place where Dr. King had been assassinated, all I could do was to stand there and pray. I prayed for Dr. King, I prayed for Dr, King’s family. I prayed for black people, I prayed for civil rights. I prayed for all Americans regardless of their race who have benefited from what Dr. King gave his life attempting to accomplish. I pray for Karen Hernandez, who has shown others and me what Dr. King intended racial relations to become. I finally ended my prayer asking for forgiveness of those individuals who were or have been raised to hate. For some reason, standing there where such a great man was killed makes you see life from his perspective. He would have asked us to forgive. It was that moment that became my Dream Reborn Great Turning moment. It was that moment of forgiving that my directions for Greening Kansas City; begin to evolve in my conscious self. It was that moment that I begin to see a need to create a 1960/70's kind of grass root door-to-door campaign. If you think this was exciting, just wait until I tell you about my afternoon march with Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III, and Dr. King's youngest daughter. Peace!!!
