I really wish it was possible for me to be able to concentrate on sustainability only, but as a person of color I find myself in a position of being responsibility for keeping the lack of us an issue. As we prepare for our meeting Sunday, ask yourself, how many Native Americans have been contacted about joining our coalition. Or as far as that is concerned how may Hispanic have been contacted.
Sustainability requires inclusiveness of cultural participation. I love seeing how individuals within our coalition who have a special interest step out to address those special concerns. If I had my preference I would be spending my time seeking ways to introduce sustainability to our urban Wyandotte County Communities, but unfortunately getting more people of color involved is a necessity first. The job is too overwhelming for just so few a people.
However we are making strides. The last event we held featuring Chester Owens our local Kansas City, Kansas historian we very successful as far as us being able to fill the "Q" Brew with folks. Our coalition members were highly visible, which we saw as our way of seeking additional members. We need to do likewise with our Native American and Hispanic friends also.
As we are thinking of the purpose for our coalition for this Sunday’s meeting, don't forget to include the need to mobilize more sustainability-concerned people of color.

PEOPLE OF COLOR CONCERNS
Agreed that we need to bring more people of color into the sustainability process, but how do we do that? How do we reach those people? What if we had a sustainability project in the urban core that had some signage out in front of it that told people how to contact us and get involved. I think doing something tangible would have a greater impact on getting people involved. We should be partnering with other projects like Bridging the Gap and Habitat for Humanity to bring sustainable solutions into what they are doing.
So I hear your question, but how about some ideas for marketing our message to the audience to which you are referring.
Peace,
Jim
